IITK to start Undergraduate Medical Course in 2021-22
Date: 22-Oct-2019Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) is likely to start MBBS course with an initial intake capacity of 50 students from the academic year 2021-22. The 400-bed super specialty hospital i.e. Dr. B C Roy Institute of Medical Sciences & Research is likely to start the Out Patient Department (OPD) services by the end of the year. The indoor services for 400-beds likely to start early next year.
In the first phase, IITK will open window of MBBS admission for 50 students, which will make the West Bengal based institute the first IIT to start the MBBS course. The course curriculum will be based on MCI guidelines.
In the second phase, the plan is to scale it up to a 750-bed hospital and increase the seat capacity to 100.
IIT Kharagpur will award the MBBS and postgraduate degrees. The Institute will also manage the academic affairs and chart out the course curriculum. The special purpose vehicle floated under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013, will run the day-to-day hospital management.
The institute has already collaborated with AIIMS New Delhi, South Eastern Railway Hospital and Tata Medical Centre.
